<div style="text-align: justify;">
Beautiful! I <strike>swore</strike> was thinking I wouldn't buy any more pretty china but while trawling through Vinnie's the other day, I spotted this gorgeous plate. You can't see it, but there are indentations where the floral motifs are - similar to a devilled egg plate. I just love it. When I got home, I looked at the back and it has the initials B.H. and 90 so I'm assuming B.H. made the plate in 1990. I thought it was a lot older than that but it doesn't matter. I hope B.H. knows that it has gone to a loving home and will be admired and appreciated for a long time to come.</div>

Totally useful. This is the best funnel in the whole world. It is a milk container cut down and I use it for so many things. It has a very wide neck and the handle is just so good for holding the funnel steady. I also use it to bottle my jams and pickles. It's marvellous!<br />

Not so useful. When I went to pickle school, I bought all manner of things that looked like a good idea. This funnel is one of them and it's totally useless.</div>

It comes apart and is supposed to be three funnels in one. Ha! The biggest bit is too big for most bottles. That grey bit in the middle has a slanted hole and is supposed to be the bee's knees for putting peppercorns into grinders (who knew?). I tried it once. Peppercorns still shot all over the floor and there was a lot of mucking around. Not too sure what that little red bit is for. Maybe pouring oil into something? Who knows? I am willing to concede that it could be operator error, but in my view, this expensive little item is a total waste of time, money and space.</div>

Back to beautiful. My poor old Iceburg rose. Always being belted with wind and rain; always being munched on by all manner of critters and yet, still gives me sweet smelling flowers.<br />

Useful. We had solar panels fitted some time back. <strike>Wish I'd tidied up the back patio before I took that shot.</strike> I just got a power bill and there was about a month's worth of solar in it. The bill was $364. The previous bill was $411, the one before that $410 and the one before that (before I started making a concerted effort to reduce power costs) was $552. I am thinking that the solar will be worth around $50 a month, based on the previous bills. We are paying them off interest free and if I got the cost of the panels back, I'd be one happy camper. Either way, I figure we have to be better off.</div>

The amount of rain we have had over the past few weeks has been truly amazing! I am so happy that I <strike>screamed and yelled and threw an hysterical whammy</strike> requested a tin roof when Bill the Builder built our house. I do so love to be snuggled in my bed, listening to the rain on the roof. When I mentioned to beautiful grandbaby that it was lovely to sleep in the rain, he told me it wasn't lovely at all. That we'd get wet! Although I fear my feet are about to web over, I am delighted with the tree in the front yard. It is in such beautiful bloom and in the 19 years we have lived here, I have never seen it looking like this.</div>

The rainbow lorikeets, the bees and even the flying foxes are having the best time in amongst the lovely flowers. I can't remember what tree it is now, but it's some kind of native. </div>

Our tanks are full, the yard is beautiful and green but best of all, my herbs are doing so well. A great source of pesto for home made pizzas. Friday night's dinner was prawn, camembert and chilli pizzas with the freshest pesto made with basil, mint and garlic chives. Yum! Beautiful grandbaby said I could probably work in a pizza shop, if I wanted. I don't.</div>

Of course, all this greenery brings out the munching critters and those <strike>evil</strike> cute little green grasshoppers are all over the place. I mixed up a brew of <a href="http://www.burkesbackyard.com.au/factsheets/In-the...Pest-Spray/6103">garlic chilli spray</a> and hosed everything in sight. That fixed their little red wagon for a while but with all the rain, it didn't last too long.</div>

I seem to have lost my sewing/crafting mojo lately. I started to do some dressmaking again, after many years <strike>and after having given all my patterns and fabric to Vinnie's in the great clean out</strike> but haven't continued on with that either. I think I need to visit <a href="http://www.quiltersrest.com.au/">my favourite inspiration place.</a> Beautiful daughter gave me a voucher for Christmas but with significant birthdays happening over the next few weeks, I'm going to have to think of something else. Mind you, there is some hindrance to any kind of sewing here.</div>

Christmas breakfast out on the front verandah. On Christmas Eve, we went to the six o'clock mass at the kids' school then came home and had cold chicken, prawns, ham and all the salads. It was such a lovely lead-in to the main day.</div>

Christmas lunch, a beautiful roast meal with all the trimmings. About half the presents had been opened by this time so we needed to boost our energy levels to be able to get back into it!</div>

Mum loved her quilt, even though I had to do the yank-back because the binding and label wasn't done. I'll pick it up today and finish it for her. I'm really pleased with the way it turned out.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was absolutely delighted to unwrap this excellent ruler holder. Darling son made it for me and it is just perfect. I've loaded up all my rulers, ready to go! I had floated it as a suggestion earlier this year, but didn't get much of a response so presumed it was a non-starter. I don't know why. Every time I ask him to build me something, he always does and does a marvellous job.</div>

Ready for action! These things shoot foam bullets and for a tiny while, it was decided that a lot of fun could be had, firing at me. <strike>I told the four of them that I would beat them all around the ears till they bled</strike> I gently discouraged that plan and they took themselves off down to the pool area.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then my brother, his wife and two little daughters came over <strike>for yet more food</strike> for a BBQ on Friday night. They had come down from Townsville to see us all for Christmas. We have had the most wonderful family time over the past few days. Now time to clean up the mess, put everything away and start the new year.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
SBS is under way! I finished Cross and Crown this morning. I wish I had used a different fabric for the small points though. They're not showing up very well and the ones in the top don't have any of the pink in them but it was all too much mucking around, so this block is also as done as it's going to be!</div>

Gay Paree apron for beautiful daughter. Each year, we try to outdo each other with a Desperate Housewives pack. This year, Angie's pack will be this apron, some crocheted dishcloths, rubber gloves with <strike>fake fur</strike> pure maribou trim, Bella champagne and Lindt chocolates. I will pack it all into a Coles cooler bag.</div>

Another apron, this time for darling son who has built an amazing bar on his deck. It's not very clear, but I have embroidered the Cheers logo in black at the top of the apron, which is just made out of white cotton. With it goes two black hand towels, Cocktail Parties for Dummies and a half dozen bottles of <strike>what I truly hope is</strike> cordial to put in champagne.</div>
<br />
We took Mum and gorgeous grandbaby up to Yandina to the Ginger Factory. What a great day we had.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Good news! A giant Christmas parcel arrived at the front door and I told Hannes he could open the bag. 'But what if there's a present for me in there?' he wanted to know in typical male fashion. Told him he needn't worry but as he was unpacking the goodies and putting them under the tree, he spotted a tag with his name on it! He was ecstatic! Inside was a present from <a href="http://lyndainwonderland.blogspot.com/">Yinda</a>! A Christmas badge making kit so of course, we had to get to work on it right away.</div>

In the same parcel was a gift to Suby from Merc. Hannes was delighted about that too but Bill the Builder was off in the Suby so we had to wait for another day. Finally!! Suby is decked out in his Christmas clobber!<br />

And the end of an era. Graduating from kindy. No more babies. Only school children now. How quickly this year has gone by. In nearly every photo I have of the milestones in Hannes' life, Angela is also in the frame taking the same photo.<br />
<br />
There's been lots of sleepovers, lots of visits, lots of shopping, <strike>absolutely no</strike> lots of housework so I <strike>am totally freaking shattered</strike> am feeling a wee bit weary. <strike>Hang the misteltoe. Gimme the wine.</strike> I might wander off for a <strike>good stiff drink</strike> cooling beverage and put my feet up before making the final decision on whether or not to quilt a quilt for Mum for Christmas. I hope everyone's Christmas preparations are tootling along beautifully! I love Christmas.Diannhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17154791918515109647noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3904518857041105834.post-62927592159952801722012-12-15T17:43:00.001+10:002012-12-15T17:54:37.086+10:00At this time of the year.........<div style="text-align: justify;">
things start getting busier and slowing down. How can that be? I think that by this time in the year, everyone is starting to feel a wee bit tired and in need of a good break. I have had some happy days and some a little bit sad. All my babies are growing up and next year will see the littlest guy going to Prep. My happy days have been having all the grandbabies have a sleepover and put up the tree and decorations.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFkGBYYvw0SZZRoRs4xYyEfoRvXCI6G7nzs-XzQaYO5W0lwE9CQSXPo89FMxFO1n01T5fk0LIY3v-k6R8JbTGnf8Bg6OJcVqV6qyS4fi_r2nn2SlpXGY_eE1vmnGrCTyrC1tj2h2glsGs/s1600/15+December+2012+Blog+001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img bea="true" border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFkGBYYvw0SZZRoRs4xYyEfoRvXCI6G7nzs-XzQaYO5W0lwE9CQSXPo89FMxFO1n01T5fk0LIY3v-k6R8JbTGnf8Bg6OJcVqV6qyS4fi_r2nn2SlpXGY_eE1vmnGrCTyrC1tj2h2glsGs/s320/15+December+2012+Blog+001.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
After some <strike>tense moments</strike> lively discussion, a spot was decided on for the tree. Then after much mucking around and <strike>threats of tears and tantrums</strike> sorting out of boxes, the final decisons were made on the decorations and lights. So many special things to put on my tree. Handmade and store bought decorations from dear <a href="http://lyndainwonderland.blogspot.com/">Lynda</a>, a special bauble I bought from the most amazing Christmas shop in New York, some bows my beautiful daughter made for me when I had my first Christmas home alone <strike>and put the decorations up by myself, bawling, chugging wine and howling along to 'I'll be home for Christmas'</strike>. A music box ornament that Hanney bought for me last year "because it looked like Gramma" <strike>though I'm not sure what part of Santa patting a lamb looked like me and I don't want to think about it</strike>; a string of leather reindeers that Holly bought for me in Canada "because Grandma loves cats" <strike>which makes absolutely no sense to me</strike>; the most amazing little house from Las Vegas that Jack bought for me "because Grandma likes weird stuff" <strike>what makes him say that??</strike> So after much oohing and aahing, we finally had the tree! Taa daaah!!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
My happy and sad day was when I went to Hanney's kindy concert to see the little ones do the nativity play. Happy, because they were all so beautiful and innocent and keen to get it right. Sad, because it is just a fact of life that they are growing up and things will change - for them and for me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Hannes was Joseph, although he told me he was Joseph and Mary so I was waiting to see how that panned out.</div>

Here, Mary tells Joseph 'we gunna haff a baaaby' to which Joseph replies 'um, well, OK'. Fairly brought the house down. Joseph tells Mary that they have to go to Bethlehem to pay Joseph's taxes. Mary says they'll take the donkey, to which Joseph replies ' yes, well, that's probly a good idea, Mary'. House came down again. The good news is, they got to Bethlehem!</div>

On Wednesday, 12th of the 12th 2012, we had our anniversary. Here I am, looking totally shattered after three full days of little guys. Everyone said the world was going to end. <strike>That's what Mum said 42 years ago</strike>. But it didn't and we went out to dinner at the Courthouse Restaurant in Cleveland. Bill the Builder had the Oysters Kilpatrick. If you go to that restaurant, do <em><u>not</u></em> have the Oysters Kilpatrick. They were minute oysters that were overloaded with finely ground bacon <strike>I think</strike> and wildly overcooked. When Bill the Builder questioned the quality, he was informed that was how they got them. Clearly, the restaurant does not make its own Oysters Kilpatrick but buys them in, ready made. Poor form.</div>

Our household is very big on <strike>trying to keep calm and usually failing dismally</strike> keeping calm so when I saw this little stitchery on <a href="http://www.red-brolly.com/">Bronwyn Hayes</a> blog, I just had to stitch it out as a mug mat for darling daughter, after I saw this perfect coffee cup! I am going to fill the cup with homemade Russian caramel that I saw just today on the <a href="http://down---to---earth.blogspot.com/">Down to Earth forum.</a> It is a recipe that my mother made for many years <strike>until our dentist bills got too high</strike>.<br />

We recently took Mum for a drive up through Fernvale, Esk and Toowoomba so she could check out the new car. We called into the Wivenhoe Dam area to have our lunch and spotted this little guy up in the tree. How cute is he?? Billy Connolly says that you have to love a country that has an aminal called a hairy nosed wombat. Well, I say you also have to love a country that has these little guys so close to a capital city. Why do we refuse to take better care of them?</div>

Mum really enjoyed the car because it is higher than the Commodore and she was very easily able to get in and out of it. She was also able to sit in the back in comfort because there was plenty of room and she was easily able to see out. She had a lovely day out, as did we all. We certainly live in a beautiful country.</div>

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! This is my favouritest elf in the whole world or any other big place. I just adore him and while he was horrifed to discover that his elf suit from two years back had disintergrated into a handful of powder, he quickly recovered when beautiful daughter brought out this outfit. Hannes loves a good dress-up and is always so willing to get into the swing of things. Such a joyful little critter.<br />

Bill the Builder and I went over to help decorate the tree and how can you decorate a tree without a flashing red nose? We had a lovely night. Memories are made of these, as the song says. The collection so far! I absolutely love this time of the year. I've been beavering away on gifts but have nothing finished that I can show at the moment. Needless to say, SBS has taken a back seat <strike>where it spends a lot of time</strike> but the new year will see it moving along again. No idea what I'll do with it when I'm done. It's very busy. Need to get a wriggle on with everything. Bill the Builder is away to Victoria on his motor bike so I'm home alone for a few days which is always good for getting lots of things done. I just love Christmas!</div>

This is a mixed fruit and walnut slice that I got from <a href="http://happyinquilting.blogspot.com.au/">Peg's</a> blog. I discovered it ages ago and have made it so many times. It is always a winner. Very easy to make, lovely to eat and makes a large quantity. I didn't have enough mixed fruit this time round so added some dates. I love that beautiful green leaf plate too. Mum gave it to me years ago and I kept it safe and sound in the dresser. Then, one day, I just decided to start using all my beautiful things and it gives me such pleasure.</div>

One slow contribution to SBS this weekend. This is Crossed Canoes and is something of an odd block, I thought. The colours haven't come up very well here. The pale fabric is a light apricot with a white spot.</div>

I do have enough to make a good sized quilt but am starting to look on this project as a learning experience. My babies are certainly growing up. On Friday, the kindy kids were allowed to wear their school uniforms for next year for a 'show and tell'. They all looked so grown up in their uniforms but when they changed back into their kindy uniforms, they were just babies again. Time goes so quickly.</div>

Hannes in his new school uniform. He will be in prep next year. And what blog post from me would be complete without a photo of the latest flowers from SIL's garden? The white roses are mine but the goregous red ones are his. Hope everyone has had a lovely weekend.</div>

This week, Grandparents' Day is being celebrated. I never heard of Grandparents' Day till last year, when the kids asked me to go along to their school. Yesterday, it was for the beautiful Holly and they celebrated with a liturgy, some games and lunch.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was really touched with the service because each child had to nominate something that they thought was good about having grandparents and the whole morning was devoted to the value of older people; their wisdom, their experience and their value to the younger generation. The kids were encouraged to ask their grandparents about their personal stories and about their lives when the grandparents were the age of these kids. The kids had to bring along their favourite toys but they also had to give a presentation on the history of the toy. Holly chose Lego and there was some quite interesting history that she dug up!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
There were two classes of Grade 2 involved and one group brought the savoury portion of lunch and the other group brought the dessert section. We played some games, using Apple laptops (!!!) out in the playground and the kids had to choose a game that they thought their grandparents would have played. Holly chose a billy cart and built a virtual billy-cart on the Apple, loaded me into it and proceeded to push me down the hill. My character was a hen so I'm not sure if there was any hidden message there! Needless to say, I spent a lot of time being emptied out of the billy-cart. How times have changed.</div>

This flower was made with cutouts of their hands and feet and had little messages written on them. Just lovely. On the previous Friday, Holly's brother Jack, was sick and came over to my place for the day. He recovered quite dramatically after a few ice blocks while watching Star Wars! In the afternoon, I asked him to strike a 'sick' pose so I could take his photo. How good an actor is he?? He looks like he's on death's door! All my grandbabies are SUCH drama queens. I have no idea where they get it from.</div>

What a wonderful grandma week I've had! It's very heartening to see schools encourage participation by grandparents and to encourage kids to find out what older people can offer them. Stay safe, my beautiful grandbabies and have a wonderful life. Grandma loves you all very much.</div>

After a lot of looking around and test driving and <strike>screaming and yelling</strike> discussion, we have finally bought a new car, so farewell to my trusty steed, the Commodore. I have loved this car and it was been wonderful. It has not cost us a bean and apart from some cosmetic touches (ie I ran into a carpark, Bill the Builder backed into a fence), it is almost as good as the day we bought it. Someone is going to get a bargain with this one. Thank you for keeping me and my babies safe and for always getting us to where we were going.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Mum gave me a heap of cherry tomatoes so I picked out the ripe ones and used all the others to make this relish. I hope it tastes OK. I haven't tried this recipe before. I also made a banana cake for the freezer and topped up the jam drop supply and have now hidden those in the spare room too.</div>

Bill the Builder is home on holidays and is <strike>goofing off</strike> tidying up the shed <strike>so he says.</strike> We are picking up a new car <strike>that looks like a Mongolian Racing Duck</strike> in the next few days and I am really hoping for a road trip down south to see <a href="http://www.lyndainwonderland.blogspot.com.au/">Lynda</a>. I'm not used to having Bill the Builder home and it's <strike>a real challenge</strike> quite nice, although there are lots of cups of tea and snacky cake. How gorgeous are these roses from SIL's garden? They are actually a lot darker red than they look here and the perfume is just exquisite. What a beautiful day it is here today.</div>

Generally, I am fairly neat and tidy. I usually put things away when I’m finished and I mostly work in a logical, orderly manner. And then the other times, I just lose the plot completely and the place looks like a bomb went off! Wherever you look, mess and chaos! Just seems to go from 'not too bad’ to ‘whoa! What happened here?'</div>

Remains of the jam drops I made, after leaving them to cool while Bill the Builder was home. Today, Barney No Friends has to go to the doctor (again) but this time, only for his annual shots. How would you fancy having to load this into a cage?? Not one of my favourite past times, let me tell you. He weighs a tonne and also has an aversion to being stuffed into a cage and having the lid slammed shut, but then, don’t we all?<br />

Last week, Bill the Builder organized new carpet for the bedrooms and major electrical renovations. I didn't have a good time, although I'm very thankful now that it's been done. Some days, I had no phone and no electricity but I put the time to good use.</div>

This is Bride's Bouquet and is totally hand done. It is as wobbly as it looks in the photo but it's as done as it's going to be. It was made with templates. Wish I'd used stronger colours though.</div>

One good thing about getting the carpets replaced was that everything had to be yanked out of the wardrobes so there was some major sorting out done. Not everything made it back in. OK. So it's not such a big potato (it's the one at the front. The one at the back is a medium sized mango) but nevertheless, it <em><u>is</u></em> still a potato! I'm so happy! I might be a farmer after all!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
What more do you need, apart from a trashy novel, a box of chocolates and a little bottle of champagne?? I know! A giant bookmark! DIL was a bit taken aback by the size of the bookmark but I liked the design and didn't know what else to do with it. Told her it was a page marker that was difficult to lose!</div>

I think Bill the Builder was having a good time. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
After the party, we drove up around Nambour and also called into the Ginger Factory at Yandina. Left after a brief visit there, clutching some beautiful ginger sauce, some rocky road and a bottle of lime and ginger marmalade. Yum! Arrived home <strike>absolutely shattered</strike> a bit tired but a good time was had by all.</div>

Spent a wonderful day recently at a Christmas table runner class. What a terrific way to spend a morning and I'm just so chuffed with the end result.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Even better, it's made entirely from my stash! How thrifty am I?? It's quite long and is actually brighter than it looks here. I am going to make another one for my dining room table and replace the centre star with an embroidery.</div>

and this is Bachelor's Puzzle. It is made with templates <strike>with a lot of mucking around and spitting and cussing</strike> which I found a tad challenging.</div>

It is said there is no such thing as a free lunch. Well, around these parts, if you want afternoon tea after kindy, you have to cook your own!</div>

Hannes loves a good cook up and always makes our dinner on Wednesday nights too. Spag bol. Every Wednesday night. Without fail. I made that apron for him (and both the other grandbabies) for last Christmas and put a wooden spoon, a biscuit cutter and a pair of tongs in the embroidered pocket. He loves it!</div>

I am always amazed when this poor plant bursts into flower each year! Mum bought it for me years ago and apart from a water from time to time, the poor thing is totally neglected. Yet each year, I get this beautiful display. Note to self: look after plant under mango tree a bit better.</div>

Beautiful gerbras from Mum's garden. She really is the gerbra queen. What a lovely day it is here today! Perfect for embroidering towels for gorgeous DIL's birthday party tomorrow.</div>

Days like today make me so happy! The perfect Spring day, with a cool breeze and lovely sunshine! Birds singing, branches waving gently in the breeze and ditto a ute load of clean washing. All is right with the world.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The light of my life turned 5 yesterday! It just does not seem that long ago that I watched him being born. What a truly remarkable and special experience that was for me. I went over to his house for a lovely birthday breakfast yesterday morning and to watch him open his presents from me and Grandad.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now that he's a big boy, I thought I should introduce him to the 'socks and jocks' gift pack! Check the smile on his face. He doesn't know, at this stage, that this will be something he's likely to be unwrapping many times in his life! He is the most joyous little critter.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Slow progress on a quilt for DIL. This block needs something. Am thinking of doing some ribbon embroidery flowers on it. Not sure.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is the church block from Bronwyn Hayes' 'We are Family' that started in Homespun No. 104. I made it blue because my son and DIL were married in the little blue church on Mt. Tamborine. I've traced out all the blocks in the first part and started the embroidery on them but not a lot to show there yet! Need to get my skates on.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Aren't fresh flowers a delight to have in the house? This beautiful bunch came from SIL's garden. Hannes told me the buds will hatch in a few days, so here's hoping! Off to do another SBS block and have a crack at doing a block that needs templates - not my strong suit! Wish me luck!</div>

What a busy week! Not without it's <strike>screaming frustrations</strike> difficulties but all in all, a good week. Spent a fabulous day at the Brisbane Craft Fair with Bill the Builder's niece and bought a little <a href="http://www.lynart.net/">silicon mould</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Not a very clear photo but it is a mould whereby you push a small piece of coloured fondant into the base and then some green over the top, then press the whole thing out and hey presto! Gorgeous little decoration for the best patty cakes in the whole world....mine, of course!</div>

I made these cakes for the birthday party yesterday and they went down a treat. Also made some mini-quiches and you can see one peeking out on the bottom left hand side of the photo.</div>

<div align="justify" style="text-align: justify;">
Started the day off at the fair with a <a href="http://www.jennykingdesigns.com/">crochet class</a> on how to crochet a hibiscus! That left me open to <strike>scorn and derision</strike> a questioning look from Carolyn but it was a wonderful start to the day for me. There was one hour tuition, a bamboo hook and two balls of beautiful cotton so excellent value, to my mind.</div>

<div align="justify" style="text-align: justify;">
And who among you does <em>not</em> need a crocheted hibiscus, hmmm??? It needs to be pressed so that the petals tighten up but I am just delighted with it! I was <strike>remarkably restrained</strike> very responsible with my purchases and even came home with $20! Here is my haul.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgIrpyRhhC0ytlVJsunR45McMD-ERiuopP9O0lu4biQHd7acePuFd3CRSDrNWqZpbidRG4533Qe208W-DzqtXcf6YPQfa_qEC9wnZ8WDkZAfLUV1ejOHk_DiOuJbLm_MJ15-VHbwLKWAg/s1600/Craft+Fair.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" nea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgIrpyRhhC0ytlVJsunR45McMD-ERiuopP9O0lu4biQHd7acePuFd3CRSDrNWqZpbidRG4533Qe208W-DzqtXcf6YPQfa_qEC9wnZ8WDkZAfLUV1ejOHk_DiOuJbLm_MJ15-VHbwLKWAg/s320/Craft+Fair.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The soap mould at the back was a tad extravagant at $10 because I have seen them in the junk shop for $3 but haven't been able to find one for a while and I want them for Christmas gifts, so bit the bullet. Carolyn and I spent a half hour with the truly talented <a href="http://www.helendafter.com.au/">Helen Dafter</a> who would have to be one of the nicest people I have ever met. We did a tutorial in ribbon embroidery and thoroughly enjoyed Helen's sense of humour. Janet Samson had a display of her beautiful embroidered quilts and so the show special had to come home with me. Janet's work stitches out beautifully and she has such pretty designs. They are not showing up very clearly here but take my word for it, they are just lovely.</div>

It was a bit of a kicker that the car blew a heater hose and had great gusts of steam issuing from the bonnet as we pulled into the carpark of the fair but at least it didn't happen on the way in. We did the responsible thing and went to the fair any way so that the car could cool down. Long story short, we came home in a tow truck! I love RACQ! Tow truck driver was a delightful young man who described himself as a former troubled child and told us how he had turned his life around. Very inspiring story.</div>

Only one SBS block done this week. Sickle block, which went together quite well and is traditionally pieced. Need to go back to Farmer's Wife Sampler too, as well as get a wriggle on with an embroidered quilt for gorgeous daughter-in-law. And the weekend ended on a high note with the 5th birthday party for the most adorable grandson in the whole world. I love this little guy so much. He brings true joy and happiness to my life. Happy birthday, Hannes!</div>

Well, what a <strike>thoroughly frustrating and infuriating</strike> wonderfully productive weekend! The last three were traditionally pieced. Need to whack up the design sheet on the dining room wall again when Bill the Builder isn't home, to see whether I'm going too blue. Made the best pizza on Friday night. I read a tip <a href="http://down---to---earth.blogspot.com.au/">in a forum here</a> about having fresh herbs all year round. You just gather up whatever herbs or greens you have, add an onion, <strike>a bucket load</strike> some garlic and enough olive oil to make a paste and then just whizz <strike>the living suitcase out of it</strike> it up to make a sort of pesto number. I used parsley, rosemary, basil, brown onion, dried thyme and dried dill and <strike>a bucket load</strike> some garlic and <strike>slathered</strike> spread it over my homemade pizza dough and let me tell you...it is <strong><em><strike>the freakin' goods</strike>!</em></strong> really nice.</div>

Read a great tip <a href="http://down---to---earth.blogspot.com.au/">here</a> the other day about cutting the bottom of a bunch of wilting celery and standing it in water to revive it. Ditto lettuce. It is sitting on a king bed so I'm not sure whether it will fit on my quilt frame or not. I'm working up to quilting it for Mum's birthday. Need backing and batting and was working up to getting that this week, but haven't made it so far. Intended to pick it up after I <strike>dragged</strike> ferried Mum to the doctor this morning but ended up going for coffee instead.</div>

Blimey! Didn't realize how long it had been since I've done any blogging. But have I been slack? No. In fact, I've been a very busy little vegemite. What inspired me to spring back into print is my progress on Sylvia's Bridal Sampler. I am actually up to block 50. On the strength of that, I pinned my design sheet up in the dining room and whacked all the blocks on. Bill the Builder will never notice the extra pin holes in the wall!</div>

Not sure about that one third from the right on the top row. Might need to check and see if that's how it's supposed to look.<br />

I have also caught the crocheted dishcloth bug. Since I am the instant gratification fairy, I love doing these! The first obvious plus is that I <em>can</em> do them and the other thing is, they are so fast, which we like! Mind you, some of them are a bit squiffy so they are the ones I kept. I gave some to Mother and to gorgeous daughter. They are mildly abrasive, very quick drying and it's just nice to have something pretty to do with dishes with. How sad is that??</div>

Need to go and get out of my jammies now and forage in the freezer for something to defrost and feed Bill the Builder. Seem to recall a lump of brontysaurus in there somewhere. I'll do something creative with that. Hope he doesn't say 'surprise me'. We all know how <em>that</em> one ends!Diannhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17154791918515109647noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3904518857041105834.post-29792218685673307332011-07-24T19:00:00.000+10:002011-07-24T19:00:59.496+10:00Pickle School<div style="text-align: justify;">I have a new hobby! I went to pickle and jam school a couple of weeks ago and now have a new obsession! 'Cause I need a new obsession! I had the best time and we made green pawpaw chutney, mandarin jam, tomato relish and preserved lemons. It's all been eaten except for the preserved lemons which has to sit and think about itself for another fortnight. But I haven't been idle. I've since made........</div><br />

The flavours of them all are so far removed from store bought stuff and all taste divine. I've got a few more recipes I want to try and I haven't quite worked out how to tell when the jam is ready. The jam and marmalade above are way overcooked and you need a crow bar to get them out of the jar. My mother says she spread the orange and apricot on pikelets. Now, there's a woman you wouldn't mess with! I was flat out spreading it on cold toast.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Other culinary delights from the kitchen today include a carrot and orange cake, curried vegetable and lentil soup and savoury glazed meatloaf (that just went ding!). I haven't made a meatloaf before and am not sure how well it will go down with Bill the Builder. He has a horror of 'strange' food and I sense meatloaf will classify. He demanded that I quit putting weird sh*t in his food after he discovered a bean in his salad, but that's another story.</div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">I haven't been idle in the sewing room either. Weeellll.....I have a little bit but I've finished the top of Teddy Tea Party. What a slog that was but I'm really pleased with it, especially the mitred corners, thanks to Lynda's tutorials.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOIabgoSfXseUeZyaHnE_jh8T7Xkr9ZOaxuDpk0qOIZdDM4pYNI7PSOykqjOSYO6y3PPuR8g090RxaWYXVgqv9Zc7rPpd6JokYCT6oMjjAKvoCt1r3kETpbC6hRs_ohjgZQfNDLAgDmWU/s1600/Teddy+Tea+Party.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOIabgoSfXseUeZyaHnE_jh8T7Xkr9ZOaxuDpk0qOIZdDM4pYNI7PSOykqjOSYO6y3PPuR8g090RxaWYXVgqv9Zc7rPpd6JokYCT6oMjjAKvoCt1r3kETpbC6hRs_ohjgZQfNDLAgDmWU/s320/Teddy+Tea+Party.jpg" t$="true" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">That little black body belongs to the gorgeous Belvedere, my sweet boy who I love dearly, but who I shall dong on the head with a heavy spanner if he swings off the end of this again. This quilt will be for Charlotte, my eldest niece. They are all coming down from Townsville for Christmas this year so I need to get it finished before then. It could happen.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">I've also done my Sylvia's Bridal Sampler homework from last week. I have tried and tried to upload the photo and it just will not do it. Have no idea why because I took all these photos at the one time and have saved them all in the same place.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

Yes, I know. Now sewing the binding down has been added to my list and that will mean I only have 32 UFOs!! And speaking of gorgeous critters, these beauties popped in yesterday. How beautiful are they??<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">I've yanked out another UFO - Vintage Valentine - and have added that to my list. I've done five of the smaller blocks and the large central block so seven smaller blocks to do. I'm aiming to have it finished by 8 May in time for my gorgeous daughter's 40th birthday. It's doable. It's on the list. Also on the list for this week is the two smaller blocks for TTP, two more FWS blocks and the SBS block of the moment, Friendship Star. Oh, and the cat quilt binding. I'll get there. I also think I should get a medal or a prize (preferably cash) because I am using stash on nearly everything. I am SUCH a thrifty quilter!</div>Diannhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17154791918515109647noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3904518857041105834.post-51390650300475158632011-02-13T10:54:00.000+10:002011-02-13T10:54:19.940+10:00February Focus<div style="text-align: justify;">I decided, since I have the attention span of a gnat, to make February my "Focus" month. Focus on what projects I've got going on and focus on getting them finished. The main one is Teddy Tea Party, which was supposed to be for my niece for Christmas. Still, I never did specify which particular Christmas so it could still happen. Here is Block F.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioFB47zNrEFzHlrVNZDrwHD9XBTVl00XZpmguXbmQLHxMRDVZ4JpRfNEgF5IK0enwZipiLFNl2ZNCpUUH1wgGVVjd9NSokLZ3E2ACsnpY-kVbtM2td8Dpym3QxXxQqStOow1oO8LNBZl0/s1600/TTP+block+F.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" h5="true" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioFB47zNrEFzHlrVNZDrwHD9XBTVl00XZpmguXbmQLHxMRDVZ4JpRfNEgF5IK0enwZipiLFNl2ZNCpUUH1wgGVVjd9NSokLZ3E2ACsnpY-kVbtM2td8Dpym3QxXxQqStOow1oO8LNBZl0/s320/TTP+block+F.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">It will be a pretty little quilt and I was fortunate enough to get some cup and saucer border from Jenny in Bundaberg. For some reason, I am finding all the blanket stitching extremely boring. Not sure why. I usually love to blanket stitch.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjipmbKQNzravZ528oxZLhwIUc-Fz6gDTsi-pq-Vswtu6xDrE0oiuI97HuLs8QIJws4Lop2KKoJyvNBQK8ytqdZFJ3fuZGAXrHuL2MzxVenXTVwt17yowb_KJZ_4TkAvoX0-3KHpI6-L1k/s1600/FWS18.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" h5="true" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjipmbKQNzravZ528oxZLhwIUc-Fz6gDTsi-pq-Vswtu6xDrE0oiuI97HuLs8QIJws4Lop2KKoJyvNBQK8ytqdZFJ3fuZGAXrHuL2MzxVenXTVwt17yowb_KJZ_4TkAvoX0-3KHpI6-L1k/s320/FWS18.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">This is block 18 of Farmers Wife Sampler and is called A Century of Progress. I unpicked this block and resewed it about 7 times. This is as close as I could get to having the centre points all match up. Not sure what I did wrong. The two halves are terrific.......until I sew them together and then it all goes pear shaped.</div><br />

Because yesterday, I <em>ironed!!</em> Yep. You heard right. Ironing for me is not just a quick half hour here and there. It is a major project, with the emphasis on major. It involves trashy movies, bottles of bubbles, a take over of the lounge and generally, life as everyone knows it goes on hold. I drag baskets and racks and cords and tables out into the lounge room, close all the windows and put on the fans and aircon (don't want to over heat - still 5,000 degrees here) mix up my special starch brew, pour the bubbles and load up the trashy TV. That of itself wears me out! But it is now done till next time.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi2HOA7896A7DDOEM1-puxN2caskqREVofJaH53QT0IF0cFRtAR_eQWa6PK9vJSDKI7PHYtjTpiSTQ4J1WgNmCzsYERr7sRaxgONKaZlz0o9c9Z5D9j0Dd151wKknvx9oUI4anfwd8k3c/s1600/SBS+003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" s5="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi2HOA7896A7DDOEM1-puxN2caskqREVofJaH53QT0IF0cFRtAR_eQWa6PK9vJSDKI7PHYtjTpiSTQ4J1WgNmCzsYERr7sRaxgONKaZlz0o9c9Z5D9j0Dd151wKknvx9oUI4anfwd8k3c/s320/SBS+003.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Ingredients for special brew starch. <br />
The weekend wasn't a total write off. I did three more blocks of my Farmer's Wife Sampler quilt. I am really enjoying doing this one and like reading the letters that go with it. I had started following an online group but got behind so just started at block one and am working my way numerically through the book.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCzvkDq671UadyXdODL_g9lGOPnRMgqmJrGpBfSkVO7e5n0dgLulxPjA49cq0kCo8L9D_7n09ryhpxejMi23Y4jz8bxWbrd9ydEIdA2AgG-2-Xn3wi5eX8ZGHHAuQ6mkAf8PMFD_njR0A/s1600/SBS+006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" s5="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCzvkDq671UadyXdODL_g9lGOPnRMgqmJrGpBfSkVO7e5n0dgLulxPjA49cq0kCo8L9D_7n09ryhpxejMi23Y4jz8bxWbrd9ydEIdA2AgG-2-Xn3wi5eX8ZGHHAuQ6mkAf8PMFD_njR0A/s320/SBS+006.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>This is block 15 Buzzard's Roost. I was really careful with it (the second time I made it) and have got the half square triangles marginally better but they are still not right. This block is wobbly but not as bad as it looks here.<br />

Perfect weather, excellent food and <strike>dodgy</strike> loving family. Prawns with excellent dipping sauce (made by me, of course), lamb chops (and not just for the girls), snags, lamingtons, pavlova and what Aussie Day celebrations would be complete without these rissoles?? (made by son).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaJ63Kmmy0o-0jOxubumx1JKLJqewd5gmDQ-l8MV8aFYrqPf_GfKxrvmcyf15YskWoVFBmX-K98VTkL-8mrHy4a7SOBn_PmnWgKS4g01IX7tNk-TcNlLlVRixgZ6J5ciiIr4ItOau2c0E/s1600/Australia+Day+002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" s5="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaJ63Kmmy0o-0jOxubumx1JKLJqewd5gmDQ-l8MV8aFYrqPf_GfKxrvmcyf15YskWoVFBmX-K98VTkL-8mrHy4a7SOBn_PmnWgKS4g01IX7tNk-TcNlLlVRixgZ6J5ciiIr4ItOau2c0E/s320/Australia+Day+002.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">After lunch and a swim in the pool, it was time for the Grand Master (me) to assess and approve all the thongs for the thong throwing competition. Sadly, one pair of thongs had to be disallowed due to the aerodynamic build on the heel which would clearly have given the owner an advantage. Since I was in charge, I was able to allow the owner to borrow an approved thong for throwing, although there was some objections raised by other participants. They were ignored.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi70bqCuV_guWaShAm-VTGW59f7D2aatO-j_M9OKUMr31Egt6DQ_GhzoQ1EyYRjjJvtrr-_vVWHrTxowswi7gcJILfik0b42nKJ7zUe0UtVCIT37NLQD8xL7dxP-kA53n1TYnmtQIvsR08/s1600/Australia+Day+003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" s5="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi70bqCuV_guWaShAm-VTGW59f7D2aatO-j_M9OKUMr31Egt6DQ_GhzoQ1EyYRjjJvtrr-_vVWHrTxowswi7gcJILfik0b42nKJ7zUe0UtVCIT37NLQD8xL7dxP-kA53n1TYnmtQIvsR08/s320/Australia+Day+003.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">The dogs thought the whole thing had been organized for their benefit and one of the thongs met with an untimely end in the jaws of <strike>an amazingly stupid</strike> a very quick boxer dog. Again, objections were raised but subsequently ignored. What a terrific day we had and what a terrific country we live in. I know that many Australians are having a really tough time of it at the moment, but all in all, we enjoy freedom, democracy and safety in this country. In spite of the bad times, we are very fortunate.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Won't be any more work done on Sylvia's Bridal Sampler for a day or two.
